Athanor: Open Source LENR Steps Forward

Italian high school teacher and engineer Ugo Abundo has released detailed plans thru the Italian blog 22Passi on how to build an LENR reactor like the one designed, built, tested and patented by himself and a group of professors and students at the Leopoldo Pirelli High School in Rome. The reactor is an electrolytic cell much in the tradition of the one first built by Dr. Martin Fleishmann and Dr. Stanley Pons at the University of Utah in 1989. However, modifications have been made and the current device most closely resembles a Ohmori-Mizuno cell, an early test cell built by 2 Japanese researchers with those respective surnames. The cell has been further modified by Eng. Abundo and his group to include a proprietary cathode that serves as the “heart” of the unit. This cathode has been patented. However, accordingly to Eng. Abundo, the purpose of this patent is not to protect intellectual property rights per se, but more to ensure that no one else patents this device and subsequently attempts to prevent others from replicating it. In fact, it is the goal of Eng. Abundo to see this cell widely replicated, thus aiding in confirming the results of his group in particular and LENR in general. Three Italian universities have reportedly already stepped forward and volunteered to confirm the results of the Leopoldo Pirelli High School group but the names of these institutions and the time table of their involvement is not clear.
Reportedly the Athanor cell produces energy at a coefficient of performance (COP) of 4, or 400% over the input energy. By comparison, Andrea Rossi’s e-Cat reportedly has a COP of 6 and the device of rival Defkalion, the Hyperion, has a COP of 20. But, rest assured, the goal of the Pirelli HS Group is not to compete with Rossi or Defkalion, but to widely disseminate this technology in hopes of definitively providing proof of principal to a skeptical world.
Before providing links to the instructions on how to replicate an Athanor cell, first a little history on the etymology of the word “athanor.” According to the Wiki:
In alchemy, an athanor is a furnace used to provide heat for alchemical digestion. An athanor is a self-feeding furnace, designed to maintain a uniform temperature. The athanor was also called Piger Henricus (“Slow Harry”), because it was chiefly used in slower operations, and because when once filled with coals, it keeps burning a long time. For this reason the Greeks referred to it as “giving no trouble”, as it did not need to be continually attended. It was also called the Philosophical furnace, Furnace of Arcana, or popularly, the Tower furnace.

If your eyes glazed over and your mind disconnected as soon as you read the word “alchemy,” let me just remind you that alchemy was a precursor to modern science and its methods have been highly influential on such scientific disciplines such as chemistry and medicine. Two alchemists, Jābir ibn Hayyān and Robert Boyle, are both credited as being the fathers of chemistry, and it is said that the study of alchemy also influenced Isaac Newton’s theory of gravity. Futhermore, “The attempts of alchemists to arrange information on substances, so as to clarify and anticipate the products of their chemical reactions, resulted in early conceptions of chemical elements and the first rudimentary periodic tables. They learned how to extract metals from ores, and how to compose many types of inorganic acids and bases.” (per Wiki alchemy article)
While the production of gold and silver from base metals was the primary goal of the practitioners of alchemy, to this point these elements have not been widely reported in cold fusion experiments, although there have been sporadic reports of such. However, there can be little doubt that repeated reports of transmutation of elements in cold fusion experiment are highly evocative of alchemy. Transmutation of elements is such an integral part of cold fusion experimental results that the term low-energy nuclear transmutation (LENT) is gaining increasing traction in some circles as the preferred term for the phenomenon. Enrico Fermi, Nobel Prize winner and one of the “fathers” of nuclear fission, once said “Give me enough neutrons and I will give you the entire periodic table.” Of course the lack of detectable neutrons has long been a primary criticism of nuclear physicists against cold fusion, with many failing to realize that in cold fusion the neutrons are an integral part of the transmutation and heat production process, and not largely a hazardous byproduct as in “hot fusion.”
Now, the links on how to replicate an Athanor cell can be found at 22Passi and E-Cat World. The instructions at 22Passi were originally in Italian and the link provided on E-Cat World is a Google translation of these. Needless to say, the Google translation is inexact. The instructions at E-Cat World have been translated by an Italian speaking reader of that site, “Francesco,” and are much clearer than the Google translation. I have taken the liberty of formatting the translation from E-Cat World into PDF format for easing downloading and reference. It may be download and/or opened by clicking here. I did make some minor changes to make the document easier to read, especially the included diagram.
Some notes for those wishing to attempt replication of the Athanor cell:

Be mindful of all instructions provided, including but not limited to the SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS.
This is not a kitchen or garage project. It is recommended that all experiments be carried out in a properly equipped laboratory by persons having the proper skills and training to conduct such experiments.
Be advised that the calorimetry (measurement of heat output) is extremely challenging. As above, to ensure accurate results make sure you have the proper equipment and expertise to perform the proper measurements accurately.
Ongoing testing results, additional instructions, updates and information will be provided on this page on 22Passi and I will provide pertinent updates on this site as they become available.

An important limitation that I have always complained about the above aspects can be summarized as follows: “A car of Formula 1 would not pass the review”
Without exaggerating the comparison (we do not intend to compare the Hydrobetatron to Ferrari), is explicitly noted that the search for optimal conditions for conducting the reaction has been severely limited by the previous experimental set-ups (too inappropriate to vary the level of the fluid unknowns on possible liquid phases suspended in the steam impediment to use voltages “bright”, etc..).

After a brief illustration of the scheme, it asks those who follow us to contribute to the shared review buoyancy, to a faster route to the finish line.

The criteria used in the scheme are simple:

in an insulating container, the jacketed reactor gives up heat to the cooling fluid of which it evaluates the energy gap;
all the outgoing flow (steam, water transported, hydrogen, oxygen) is cooled to evaluate indistinctly the thermal energy contained globally;
measurements are provided once you reach the steady state.

Where required by the operating conditions, it will keep constant the liquid level in the reactor by means of tuck (keeping thermally account).
The pair of devices in comparison will remain in operation for the screening of the most interesting conditions to be subjected to calorimetry.
